Well, Birmingham Alabama finally got a truly premier food store now that Whole Foods has opened. I visited the store yesterday and I came away impressed with the content and execution of the store. Now I don't know that I will shop there on a weekly basis, but my wife, daughter and I will visit quite often.
For me not only will I be curious to see if they keep up the high level of execution I witnessed on my first visit there for the long run, but I just enjoy visiting exceptional retail outlets of any kind, especially food stores. It 's just my opinion, but the folks at Whole Foods are exceptional merchants. With the exception of a Central Market, I don't think there is another operation that could put a dent in these guys.
Beyond the unique merchandising and food offerings that make Whole Foods what it is, they invest the appropriate labor to keep it right. Beyond the hand Stacked produce department virtually every department has some kind of direct to customer service element. What do you figure these folks know that other retailers don't.
It is ashame that so many food store chains are handcuffed by operational control. While other chains are continually working their model to take labor out, Whole Foods just sticks a finger in their eyes by doing what others are too timid to do.
